29/5/2008 - Cumbria goes mad for Recycle Week 20080

Cumbria will mark National Recycling Week 2008 with a series of events and road shows around the county.

The annual event, which is now in its fifth year, is organised by nationally WRAP - the Waste & Resources Action Programme.

In Cumbria, the county council and the six district councils work together to tackle household waste issues as Resource Cumbria. (see http://www.resourcecumbria.org/ (external link))

Resource Cumbria events are going on in all of the county's districts and include displays of artwork made from recycled materials, compost bin drumming, real nappy stands and info on recycling.

Each event will also feature a prize draw where people can pledge to recycle 'one more thing’ and get the chance to win prizes such as recycled drinking glasses. There will also be a free cotton shopping bag for each person who makes a pledge.

The events are:

Tuesday 3 June - Penrith town centre, 10am - 2pm.

Wednesday 4 June - Carlisle city centre, 10am - 2pm - the Environment Agency will also be on hand in Carlisle to celebrate World Environment Day.

Wednesday 4 June - Kendal market place, 10am - 2pm.

Thursday 5 June - Whitehaven town centre, 10am - 2pm (Planned industrial action by waste collection staff at Copeland Borough Council mean this event might be cancelled).

Friday 6 June - Barrow indoor market, 10am - 2pm.

Saturday 7 June - Cockermouth town centre, 10am - 2pm.
