1/10/2008 - Boarding School Boost for Dallam

Students at Dallam School will enjoy fifty new single, en-suite study bedrooms thanks to the government’s multi-million pounds expansion of state boarding schools plan.

Dallam, supported by Cumbria County Council, has been awarded £1million by the government to expand its boarding provision and are one of the first schools nationally to have their application approved by the Department for Schools, Children and Families.

The design complements existing buildings on the Heversham site, some of which date back to Victorian times. Dallam currently has 65 boarders from Britain and around the world. Parents, who perhaps are working abroad, are attracted by a rural school with excellent examination results on the edge of the Lake District.

The International Baccalaureate is proving very popular with boarders this year. An independent school would typically charge an IB boarding student over £20,000 a year, three times as much as at Dallam.

Steve Holdup, Headteacher, said: "As teaching moves down to our new buildings in Milnthorpe we can start to think about development of the Heversham site. This grant helps us get boarding numbers back towards the days of Heversham Grammar School - a fitting future for a boarding tradition at Heversham that goes back almost 400 years."

Sian Rees, Head of Service: Schools and Learning, Cumbria County Council said:

, "We are delighted that Dallam was successful in its application to expand boarding provision for the benefit of their students. We hope this will complement the move to a single location on the Haversham site".
