If you haven't dropped into Penrith library for a while, you may be surprised at everything it has to offer - that's the message from the staff, who are holding an open evening next Monday (6 October) to show exactly what they have to offer.
Gone are the days of rows of rows of books and nothing else - if you drop into Penrith library between 5pm and 6pm next Monday, not only will you see computers with internet access, DVDs and books on CD, but you can also find out about storytimes and activities for young people, talks by visiting authors, and family history events.
Add to that storysacks, playaways to borrow, a housebound delivery service and mobile libraries, plus free access to the popular genealogy website Ancestry, and there's something on offer for old and young, visitors and locals.
On Monday 6 October refreshments and escorted tours of the different areas of the library will be available.
Jane Metcalfe from Penrith library says the aim of the open evening is to show how libraries have changed, and show people how they can get more out of them. She said:
"The idea is to encourage people who haven't visited a library for a while to come along and see what resources we have for the whole community and we want to include families in this, which is why we have chosen 5pm - 6pm. so that younger people can come along.
"Some people still think we are all strict, have our hair in buns, and go around saying 'shush' We're not like that any more - come along on Monday and see!"
