The winner of a countywide library service competition for 11-18 year olds to design a new library card aimed at teenage borrowers will be presented with her prize for the winning design next week (Monday June 21st).
Johanna McGrath, a 15-year-old pupil at Queen Katherine School in Kendal, won £250 worth of Argos vouchers for her winning creation, which has been turned into thousands of credit card-sized library cards for use throughout the county.
A photo opportunity of Cllr Gary Strong, Cumbria County Council's cabinet member responsible for libraries and culture, presenting Johanna with her prize and showing her the new library cards will be held at Kendal Library at 4pm on Monday June 21st.
Cllr Strong said:
"We attracted some very high quality entries in the competition, but Johanna's was the stand out entry. I'm delighted that we're seeing an increase in the number of children's books being loaned out from our libraries and young people are still using the wide range of services available. Hopefully these eye-catching new library cards will continue to attract young people to use their library."
Stephen Wilkinson, Headteacher at Queen Katherine School, said:
"I was most impressed by the quality of Johanna's entry into the library card design competition. Her art work is original, relevant and eye-catching."
