Biodiversity in Cumbria

Cumbria is particularly rich in both habitats and species, and many sites are afforded some kind of statutory protection. The county is home to many rare and endangered species such as the Red Squirrel, the Natterjack Toad, the Netted Carpet Moth and Water Vole as well as habitats of special interest such as peat bogs, hay meadows and limestone pavements. 

The Cumbria Biodiversity Partnership

The UK-wide priorities and targets from the UK Biodiversity Action Plan are being addressed locally by the Cumbria Biodiversity Partnership. The Partnership involves a variety of individuals and organisations in wildlife conservation including local communities, landowners, voluntary organisations, statutory bodies, businesses and local authorities.   

The Cumbria Biodiversity Partnership was established to produce and implement action plans for the conservation of Cumbria's important species and habitats through Cumbria's Biodiversity Action Plan.
