Current Progress

Through the Cumbria Biodiversity Partnership:

In autumn 2005 the Wealth of Wildlife Project was launched with funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund and Rural Regeneration Cumbria.  This project is working on specific wildlife projects to protect and enhance hay meadows, woodlands, bats, natterjack toads and garden wildlife. A new website will also be created which will include where to see Cumbria's wildlife.  To find out more about this project ring Dave Muir, the Wealth of Wildlife Project Manager, on 01768 212526 or see the website (follow the link below).

There is also a new Cumbria Biodiversity Action Plan Manager, Neil Harnott, who will undertake a number of wildlife projects and help the Partnership members to do more and to monitor their achievements. Neil will be co-ordinating a 5-year review of all the Cumbria BAP Actions and will identify new and up-to-date actions for the habitats and species.

A second list of species and habitats has been drawn up but action plans will not be produced until after the 5-year review has been completed.

All the partners are also beavering away doing their bit.  To find out more please contact Neil Harnott, Local Biodiversity Manager, 01539 816300 or see the website (follow the link below).

Cumbria County Council:

Has its own agreed Action Programme and is specifically working on protecting biodiversity through planning (our policies and planning applications), roadside verge maintenance and our two Local Nature Reserves.
