Landscape Strategy
Dry stone walling

We developed the Cumbria Landscape Strategy in 1997.   The strategy builds on the work we did on landscape character and published in the Cumbria Landscape Classification (CLC) in 1995.   The strategy helps us to manage change that supports economic growth, social progress and maintains a distinctive and high quality landscape across the County.  The Lake District National Park Authority has included management guidelines in its Landscape Character Assessment.

The strategy sets out our broad vision and aims for the future of Cumbria’s landscape, along with the priorities we want to work on with local authorities and other partners.   It then sets out landscape guidance for each landscape type and sub type as defined in the CLC.   This helps planners and land managers to respond positively to change.  A non illustrated copy of this can be downloaded below.

Cumbria Landscape Character Guidance and Toolkit

The strategy is being reviewed during 2009 and will be incorporated into Cumbria's Landscape Character Guidance and Toolkit.  This is being developed in partnership with all the Cumbrian local planning authorities.  It will help them develop local landscape character policy in the emerging Local Development Frameworks.  More information on this project can be downloaded below.

Cumbria Landscape Survey and Workshops

As part of developing the toolkit we sought views on landscape issues via a survey during Spring and workshops and an online consultation during Summer 2009.  The findings of these are being used to develop the draft toolkit during the end of 2009.  Click here to find out more.

A copy of the Strategy is available to buy for £10.   To order a copy please send a cheque made payable to Cumbria County Council, to Hazel Hayton-Swindle, County Offices, Kendal, LA9 4RQ.
