THE REGIONAL SPATIAL STRATEGY FOR THE NORTH WEST

The Regional Spatial Strategy (RSS) for the North West was adopted on the 30 September 2008. The Regional Spatial Strategy (RSS) is the statutory development plan from which all the Local Development Frameworks coming forward have to comply. The publication of the RSS is the culmination of over 4 years work by the North West Regional Assembly (NWRA now known as 4NW) and Government Office for the North West (GONW), involving ongoing consultation with Cumbria County Council, Cumbria's district councils, and sub-regional partners.   The County Council advises 4NW on the conformity of the LDF documents prepared by local Councils in the County.

Within the Regional Spatial Strategy the following polices from the Cumbria and Lake District Joint Structure Plan have been extended but not replaced. The Council continues to implement these policies.

As a result of the Sub-National Review of Economic Development and Regeneration, the Government has introduced legislation which requires all regions to produce a Single Integrated Regional Strategy.   This will replace the previous requirement to produce a Regional Economic Strategy (RES), Regional Spatial Strategy (RSS) and the Regional Housing Strategy (RHS).

The new Single Integrated Regional Strategy (RS2010) will become the statutory document setting out the regions future for sustainable economic growth.   It is being led by 4NW – the Regional Leaders Board and the Northwest Regional Development Agency (NWDA) on behalf of a wide group of stakeholders in the Northwest.

The Spatial Planning Team is engaged the process of developing the new Single Integrated Regional Strategy (RS2010) and is playing a key role in assisting in the drafting of the document.
