Education for Sustainable Development

Education is a fundamental aspect of the drive towards sustainability. It is now recognised that sustainable communities can only be established through improved public awareness, education and training on sustainable development issues.

Although public awareness campaigns and training courses play their part, it is the younger members of our community that are likely to make a difference in the future. Schools provide the greatest opportunity for sustainable development education by providing pupils with relevant knowledge and making them aware of their important role in preserving the environment for future generations.

Education 21 is a partnership made up of environmental education service providers.  As well as meeting regularly to help co-ordinate Cumbria's approach to environmental learning the group also has a presence on the Cumbria Grid for Learning website.   Visit the website by clicking below.  Click on the links to the left to access more information on grants/funding and other resources.

Over the last few years, progress has been made on the use of education as a tool to achieve sustainability and improve the quality of life for future generations. This is now termed as Education for Sustainable Development.

Knowledge of sustainable development is now statutory in certain school subjects including Geography, Science, Design and Technology and Citizenship, and the concept is actively promoted in five other subjects.
