Cumbria County Council is the Waste Disposal Authority and it is our responsibility to dispose of all of the municipal waste created in Cumbria. We also manage the counties 13 Household Waste Recycling Centres which are provided to enable Cumbrian householders to recycle a wide range of materials and also deposit any refuse additional to their kerbside collection. HWRCs are also used for disposing of and reycling larger bulky items as well as composting garden waste.
The 6 district and borough councils are the Waste Collection Authorites and are responsible for collecting waste from households for recycling or disposal. They are also responsible for managing Recycle Points within their area. These are the smaller recycle bank sites located at places like the local supermarket or leisure centre.
Together, Cumbria County Council and the 6 district and borough councils form the Resource Cumbria partnership. Resource Cumbria aims to make a world of difference by providing a refocused approached to waste; promoting the principles of reduce, reuse and recycle; and demonstrating that the creation of waste impacts on resources and can also be used as a resource.
