Pamela Wilkinson, branch support assistant, Workington Library

"I work at the library helping people to use computers to better their chances of getting a new job.

People quite often come us to us for help straight from the job centre, after learning that anyone claiming unemployment benefit can get free computer access at their library.

Obviously younger people are pretty used to how the internet works and know that there are all sorts of websites out there that will help you find a job. But some older people who have suddenly been made redundant don’t know where to turn to next.

We give free internet taster sessions - one great website for money advice is http://www.bbc.co.uk/raw/money/this external link will open in a new window. We can also steer people in the right direction for advice on preparing CVs and covering letters if they’re job hunting.

The library also stocks plenty of books on debt advice, money management and job hunting and we’ve been pooling these together in special display areas in the library to reflect the difficult economic times we’re living in.

Added to this, some libraries hold regular sessions that can be a real help to people in need. Near to us, there’s a weekly Citizen’s Advice Bureau session at Cockermouth library and Maryport library has a weekly drop in session run by the multicultural service for people who need advice but English isn’t their first language.

The best bit of the job is when someone you’ve helped find a job comes back to the library and says they won’t be needing their concessions slip for library users on unemployment benefits any more."

People who are unemployed or on low incomes can book free access to a PC and the internet for up to an hour a day. You can join the library by visiting your local branch or do it online at http://www.cumbria.gov.uk/libraries/services/membserv.asp
