Thank you for choosing to book your appointment online.
Current legislation states that a death must be registered in the Registration District in which it occurred. This online booking system can be used to make an appointment at the appropriate Register Office in Cumbria.
There are certain documents that you will need to bring with you to the appointment. The most important document you must bring is the Medical Certificate of Cause of Death issued by the doctor or hospital, and it is important that you do not book your appointment until you have obtained this certificate. Without it we cannot register the death. The following documents relating to the deceased may be helpful but are not essential: birth certificate, medical card and marriage certificate / civil partnership certificate.
Death Certificates for legal purposes such as banks, etc., may be purchased at the time of registration at a cost of £3.50 per certificate. Payment can be made by cash, cheque, postal order or credit/debit card.
Please note that if the death was subject to a Coroner's Post Mortem or Inquest, you will need to contact the Register Office to discuss the booking instead of using the online option.
If the death occurred outside Cumbria (or you wish to register the death in a different district in Cumbria), it is possible for you to make a ‘Declaration’ at any of the Register Offices in Cumbria. A Declaration involves the registrar taking the required information and passing it to the Register Office located in the Registration District where the death occurred. That office will then issue the Death Certificates and other vital documents. Registering by Declaration may delay any funeral arrangements being made. If you make a Declaration, payment may only be made by cheque or postal order as it has to be sent on by post.
Once the booking has been completed a confirmation page containing a booking reference may be printed for your records.
