Obtaining a copy of a registration certificate

To enable us to speak with you as quickly as possible our top tips would be

 

  • Leave a message rather than calling over and over otherwise we don't know you've been in touch and will just take longer for you to receive our help.
  • If you leave a message please only leave one and then give sufficient time for us to get back in touch (we would suggest 24 hours).  If you leave multiple messages we have more to listen to which results in lost time we could be spending with you providing assistance.

How to obtain a copy certificate of Birth, Death, Marriage or Civil Partnership

All birth, death and marriage certificates for this district are held by Cumbria Certificate Services based in Carlisle.

Copy certificates may be ordered in the following ways:

Order online:

You can 'get a copy certificate' online 24/7 using a debit or credit card in your name and registered to your address.  The certificate will be issued within five working days and once issued, posted out to you by first class post. To use this option please use the link above.

Telephone:

We are available to take your order over the telephone between the hours of 9am and 4pm Monday to Friday.

During periods of high call volumes you may receive an answer machine but please be assured a member of the team will return your call as soon as possible.

By post or in person:

Please note if we are unable to locate the record and issue the certificate a full refund will be made. If you have paid in cash you will be required to collect it from the office where the payment was made.

Please note you cannot order certificates by e-mail and under no circumstances should you put credit/debit card details in an e-mail.

 

Methods of Payment and Delivery Scale

Online and telephone orders: - Payments is made by credit card or debit card on application.

Post : - Cheque or Postal Order.

Cheques should be made payable to Cumbria County Council.

Cheques that are made out to any other payee will be returned to sender and the application can not be processed.

In Person - Cash/Cheque/Postal Order/Debit Card/Credit Card

Confirmed delivery service is £ 15.00 for the first certificate and £ 10.00 for all subsequent certificates ordered at the same time. This certificate has a proof of delivery including a signature from the receiver. You can check online or on your mobile to see if the item has been delivered and there is compensation cover up to £ 50. The certificate can take up to 5 working days to process and then posted via signed for confirmed delivery. Please contact the office to order by this method. This is not available online at this time.  PLEASE NOTE THIS OPTION IS NOT AVAILABLE FOR DELIVERY OUTSIDE OF THE UK.

Priority service is £ 32.50. If you order before 1pm this is a guaranteed before 1pm the next day service. This Certificate is also fully trackable and traceable through the Royal Mail and it also has to be signed for. Please contact the office to order by this method. This is not available online.

Standard service is £ 12.50 for the first certificate and £ 10.00 for all subsequent certificates ordered at the same time. This Certificate can take up to 5 working days to process and then posted first class. Please note that we do not accept any liability for items that go missing in the post.

We do our best to provide certificates within the above quoted timescale but in the unlikely event there is a delay due to increased demand or operational issues cannot accept any liability for certificate issue made outside the above stated time scales.

Information Required

 Your full name, address & daytime telephone number in case we need to contact you regarding the request
 We encourage you to provide a separate cheque for each certificate application. This avoids any delay should there be a problem locating an entry if several are requested.  Otherwise we can only issue the certificates once all entries are found.
 The Registration district where the event took place.  If the request is a marriage certificate then you must provide the exact place name i.e. the register office or the name of the church.  This is very important for the location of the entry
 The exact date of the event or for family history purposes a minimum of the year and quarter are essential
 Full names of the parties involved where possible otherwise we can not ensure the correct entry will be issued.
 You may wish to print one of our application forms from the menu on the right of this page which ensures all the correct information is obtained.
