NCN 72  - Ravenglass to Whitehaven Section

Road diversion from Holmrook to Santon Bridge – very heavy traffic, not advisable for cyclists.  Advice to wait until Holmrook Bridge is reopened.

The Santon Bridge diversion is very muddy and also heavy levels of traffic to Sellafield – tight country lanes with large HGV traffic.

Sellafield coastal path impassable due to windblown sand – should be clear in approxmately 1 month.

Bridge out at Egremont – more information to come.

Rest of route passable with care – localised flooding.

NCN 72 Whitehaven to Workington Section

Route impassable across the Derwent at Workington.  Diversion route is via Cockermouth – heavy traffic and long diversion.

Route ok from Whitehaven towards Workington. Suggest diversion to Workington Railway Station and use train to cross to Flimby. Be advised train services are very busy especially at commute times as this is only way across River Derwent avoiding a 2 hour (by car) diversion. Pick up 72 again at Flimby.

Workington – links to Lillyhall college and business park are open from town centre (south of derwent)

Flimby to Maryport – open and ok.

Maryport to Silloth – some localised flooding on B5300 at Allonby Church and Edderside Village – passable with care.  Pedestrian route around floods if needed.

Off road sections - route ok and bridges, structures and culverts and embankments checked 24 November.
