In the current period of recovery from flooding, we are issuing the following advice for road users which is intended to reduce traffic congestion, risk of road accidents, disruption due to broken down vehicles, parking problems and to ensure that the emergency services including highway repair services are able to work effectively:
1. Keep your travel to a minimum
2. If your journey is short consider walking or cycling instead of taking the car
3. If you have to travel consider using public transport. For information on public transport and journey planning visit the Traveline website
or call 0871 200 22 33. For the latest bus information, please visit the Stagecoach website![]()
4. Arrange to share unavoidable car trips with others - eg travelling to work, school or college, shopping.
5. If you are an employer consider providing collective transport for employees
Remember that if you are walking, cycling or catching a bus at this time of year, particularly on unlit roads, it is important to wear clothing that increases your visibility (ideally reflective and flourescent) and to use lights on your bike or carry a torch if walking.
Specifically in West Cumbria
There is an extensive network of local traffic free cycle and walk routes. For further information visit the Sustrans website
