Clearing footways

We spread salt/grit onto footways when the forecast predicts long periods of icy weather. We concentrate on the footways with the higher levels of use, which are usually in the main shopping areas of towns. Often, this is done using a pick-up vehicle loaded with salt and with men spreading it with shovels.

From this year (winter 2010/2011 we are improving the standard for treatment of footways in main shopping areas. These footways will now be pre-salted in similar timescales to second priority roads, which is within 5 hours of commencing work. Follow the link below to view a list, by district, of these priority footways.
