Priority routes

First priority roads are those which carry a large volume of traffic and link the major economic centres in the county and the region. Second priority roads serve more local needs, but still carry significant volumes of traffic. The first and second priority roads combined account for approximately one quarter of the road network in the county.

When we receive a forecast of icy conditions, we pre-treat the first and second priority roads to prevent ice from forming. We undertake to treat the first priority roads within three hours of work commencing and the second priority roads within five hours.

We also have third priority roads, which are treated only during periods of prolonged icy conditions and when the first and second priority roads are clear. The third priority roads form the links between the larger villages and towns.
