Artists impression of Northside bridge
The original Northside Bridge was swept away during the devastating floods in November 2009 and in the meantime a temporary bridge has been in place since April 2010.

The works involve the fabrication and construction of a 152m three-span composite steel/concrete highway bridge, to be erected in the same position as the former structure over the River Derwent. The bridge will reinstate pedestrian, vehicular and cycle access along the A597, which provides the main highway link to Workington from outlying areas.

The structure is supported on concrete piers with bored pile foundations. The bridge will be clad in sandstone, similar to that used on the original structure with reclaimed stone from the original structure used where possible.

Cumbria County Council has projected that the overall cost of the Northside Bridge project, funded by the Department for Transport, will be £11.17m. The value of the construction contract for Birse Civils is £6.5m.

The 50-week contract is planned for completion in September 2012 and the road opened to traffic in August 2012.

Cllr Tony Markley, Cumbria County Council’s cabinet member for highways and economic development, said: "We’ve taken massive strides forward in repairing the damage caused by the Cumbria floods and the replacement of the destroyed Northside bridge is really the last major hurdle we have to overcome in flood recovery infrastructure terms."
