23/2/2012 - Northside Bridge begins to take shape
The first massive steel beams which will form the backbone of Workington's new road bridge have been lifted into place.

Six 60-tonne 'I' beams were positioned on the north side of the River Derwent between the specially constructed abutment and concrete bridge pier built on the northern bank of the river.

16/8/2011 - Work starts on new Workington road bridge
Construction work has started on the replacement for Northside road bridge in Workington.
 
Cumbria County Council's contractor carrying out the work, Birse Civils, moved onto the site on Monday August 15 to set up new site offices and begin work on test bore holes.
 

29/6/2011 - Council welcomes confirmation of DfT funding for new road bridge in Workington Cumbria County Council's Cabinet member responsible for highways and economic development has welcomed the news that the Government has given the final green light to confirm the funding to build a replacement for Northside road bridge.

Local Transport Minister Norman Baker today confirmed that the Department for Transport will provide £11.17 million towards the new permanent crossing of the River Derwent.

26/5/2011 - Northside bridge replacement gets green light from Cabinet

County Councillors have agreed to appoint a contractor to build a new multi-million pound crossing of the River Derwent in Workington after the old Northside Bridge was destroyed in the floods of November 2009.

The contractor will be formally appointed once the final legal and financial arrangements have been completed, but Cabinet members were assured at a meeting in Carlisle today that the county council had reached agreement on amicable terms with all nine landowners and leaseholders who currently occupy parts of the land where the new improved bridge will be routed.


23/3/2011 - Planning go-ahead for replacement Northside bridge
Plans for a new multi-million pound crossing of the River Derwent in Workington have moved another step closer after councillors approved proposals for a replacement Northside bridge.

In March Cumbria County Council’s development control and regulation committee (DC&R) gave the green light to replace the road bridge that was destroyed in the floods of November 2009.

22/12/2010 - Northside replacement planning application submitted
Plans for a multi-million pound replacement of one of Workington’s main road bridges destroyed in last year’s floods have taken a further step forward.

Proposals for rebuilding Northside bridge have been submitted to Cumbria County Council’s development control and regulation committee.
