Update: 23 February 2012 - Northside bridge begins to take shape

The first massive steel beams which will form the backbone of Workington's new road bridge have been lifted into place.

Six 60-tonne 'I' beams were positioned on the north side of the River Derwent between the specially constructed abutment and concrete bridge pier built on the northern bank of the river. The beams, which are up to 3.5 metres deep and roughly 25 metres long, were welded together in pairs so that three main steel supports can span the 50 metre gap between the abutment and the pier.

As the beams were positioned above the A596 Northside Road, it was necessary to close the A596 between the Northside roundabout and the temporary road bridge so that the crane lifting the beams and delivery vehicles had room to operate.

Update: 4 January 2012 - Road closure scheduled for February

The road closure to begin the lift in of the beams to support the bridge deck, and thus allow the construction of the deck to commence, is now expected to be 24th - 27th February.

Work is progressing on the fabrication of the beams and Capita Symonds Engineers have visited the fabrication workshop to inspect the beams.

The deck construction will be 5 concrete pours between late April and mid June. Deck base course is due to be laid in the first week of July, the running course in early August ahead of white lining and other works required to allow the bridge to be open to traffic.

Trial cutting of the recovered stone from the former bridge has been carried out and the method to maximise the use of the recovered stone use in the cladding of the bridge abutments and piers is now in place.”

Update: 7 November 2011 - piling work near completion

Piling on the north abutment is almost complete and work is underway on the north pier. The ground conditions have been more problematic than expected and a revised method of pile construction has been required.  It’s a more time-consuming technique, using fluid in the bored piles to support the ground prior to the pouring of the concrete.
