Abandoned vehicles

If you spot a vehicle which you suspect has been abandoned do not enter or even touch it. It may have been used in a crime and may need to be investigated by the police. It may also contain hazardous materials and/or be a fire risk. If it is burning or burnt out do not approach it; call the Fire Service if it is still burning or the District Council if it is burnt out. If it is not burning or burnt out then the following suggestions should help you to decide whether the vehicle is abandoned.

  • Is the vehicle untaxed?
  • Are any tyres flat or wheels missing?
  • Is there undisturbed litter under the vehicle indicating lack of movement?
  • Are any windows broken?
  • Is there mould either inside or out?
  • Does the vehicle have number plates?
  • Has the vehicle been hot wired?
  • Has it been vandalised - dented bodywork, graffitti, slashed seat covers?
  • Has the vehicle suddenly appeared and no-one knows where from?

If you consider the vehicle is abandoned then call your local district council. Contact details are given below. The local authority has a duty to remove an abandoned vehicle if left on the public highway. It can also serve 15 day notice of removal on the owner if abandoned on private land.

The police also have powers of removal if the vehicle is left in breach of traffic restrictions, causes obstruction, causes danger or is broken down.
