Outdoors for All

Dent from train

This part of the website is still under development, please bear with us!

Ever wondered what opportunities for countryside access in Cumbria were available to you?   Ever wanted to go on a local walk or cycle-ride but not known where to start?   Ever wanted to find out more about rural Cumbria and farming practices from friendly people?   We can help!

The countryside access team is working in partnership with AWAZ - the voice and social network of the Black and Minority Ethnic community in Cumbria.   Together we can help with:

  • Guided walks with a countryside ranger can be co-ordinated if you are interested – these can be tailored to fit your ideas and interests,
  • Local cycle rides – either organised by a local guide, or you could be fully trained to take groups out yourself, as part of the ‘Cycling for Health’ project!   Again, to suit all ages and abilities.
  • Advice on your countryside opportunities, rights and responsibilities, through the Council’s ranger service, who would be able to meet you to discuss further to answer your questions, or even come to give a small talk to an interested group,
  • Possible farm visits, where a farmer would explain their farming practices and way of life as you look around the farm,
  • Other planned events that your community might like to get involved with, ask AWAZ for the latest information.   If you have other requests, let us know, we might not have thought of them!

If you are interested in finding out more, please contact AWAZ who will coordinate for you!   Send in your requests!

Outdoors for all news

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) issued a consultation in Summer 2006 about access to the countryside by currently under-represented groups in society.  The consultation was called 'Outdoors for All'.  By following the link at the bottom of this page you can find out more about this.

The under-represented countryside participants in question are:

  • People with limited mobility
  • Black and Minority Ethnic groups (BME)
  • Young people and
  • Inner city residents.

Consultation response

The Cumbria Local Access Forum and Cumbria County Council worked jointly on a response to DEFRA's consultation.  This was submitted on the 26th September 2006.
