Local rights of way management
Cumbria County Council is the Highway Authority for the county, which includes a duty towards all public rights of way. Much of this work is done in partnership with other bodies. This is outlined below.
Countryside Access Cumbria: Rights of Way management
- Capita Symonds cover the area outside the National Parks: Allerdale, Barrow, Copeland, Eden and South Lakeland districts, as well as the legal work for Carlisle district. In addition, urban rights of way in Ambleside, Keswick and Windermere / Bowness are managed in partnership with Capita Symonds.
- Carlisle City Council have claimed their rights to manage rights of way in the Carlisle district. They use 'East Cumbria Countryside Project' to do maintenance.
- The Lake District National Park Authority cover the Lake District National Park area, except urban rights of way in Ambleside, Keswick and Windermere / Bowness).
- The Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority cover rights of way in the three parishes (Dent, Sedbergh, Garsdale) of the Yorkshire Dales National Park area in Cumbria.
