The Lake District World Heritage Project toured Cumbria in April and May offering residents a great opportunity to learn more about the county’s unique case for World Heritage status. The mobile exhibition parked up on high streets across Cumbria, with the tour kicking off in Kendal on 4 April.
Mike Clarke, Director of the project said,
“We took the exhibition to 23 towns and villages and I have learned a lot about people’s concerns and their ambitions. We tried to cover as much of Cumbria as possible by visiting the bigger places like Carlisle and Barrow as well as the smaller towns and villages like Sedbergh, Wigton, Ravenglass and Caldbeck.”
The tour itself was financially supported by Natwest Bank, United Utilities and the Lake District Cheese Company.
The exhibition was just the first stage in talking to people about the project and Mike continues to meet with groups and individuals all over the county.
The project still has a long way to go, but Cumbria and the Lake District are vibrant, working places with a long cultural history. Generations of farming families have created the landscape we all enjoy today and international recognition for Cumbria is well deserved.
