Dear Cumbria...

Dear Cumbria

I find the diary dates section very useful but in future can you make sure that you list details of all local farmers’ markets in the area please. (Anon, Carlisle)

Thanks for your letter about our diary dates. We do try and make sure that we include all dates of the markets but in the last issue we missed the one out for Brampton in July and Milnthorpe for all months listed. We have rectified this in this issue. See page 20 for full details.

Statistics and local government failed to interest me at school. However, your recent publications have gradually caught my interest. Each issue has noticeably improved in format and eye appeal. The A to Z directory is excellent saving me hours of scrabbling in the telephone book. The colour coding is also an excellent idea too. (Mrs V.C Taylor, Penrith)

Thanks for your comments Mrs Taylor. We’re glad that you find the A to Z useful and we’ll try and keep up the good work!

Can you tell me how much does it cost to produce and distribute YourCumbria? (Mr D. Ingram, Grange-over-Sands)

Each magazine costs a total of 18 pence to produce and deliver to your door. We distribute every issue to 230,000 households in the county. To help reduce costs we try to generate as much as we can through advertising revenue. The last issue brought in £3,600 from advertising which meant the total cost for the last issue was £35,000. We hope you find this good value for money and an effective way of keeping up to date with county council news.

In the Winter 2007 issue you reported on the new green energy contract which says that all county council buildings are being supplied with energy from renewable sources. Can you categorically state that the supply to the county council from the National Grid is totally green? (Ms M. Emery via email)

We’re sorry if this article was misleading. Although we can’t categorically state that the supply is totally green, we are procuring our forecast consumption via suppliers from renewable sources and therefore contributing to the government’s target to reduce CO2 emissions by 20% by 2010. Although green electricity can be purchased, the supply from the National Grid is actually a mixture of brown and green.
